I was a National Bioterrorism Instructor at the National Training Center in 2002-2003. Adjunct faculty for a University consortium. I specialized in large scale EMS response to regional and National events. We were initially funded by DHHR and later moved to the New Dept. of Homeland Security . My colleague and our team designed an exercise using monkey pox, it was the first National Exercise to do so. It was a very successful program with high remarks and great feedback. Powers above us pulled monkey pox from the exercise , the only feedback I got was the scenario was too real and someone would duplicate it in reality. In the exercise there was complete mayhem and in our fictitious city there was a large poultry farm that burned to the ground using our fire dept. resources. Later it was discovered that terrorist were working at the poultry plant as migrants, were they were incubating the eggs at the distribution center with monkey pox. I couldn’t help but think about it when I heard of the fire in Minnesota. Now it is a common exercise used by the sinister players.
